The Difference Between Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

Both Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are trending terms at the moment. These buzzwords are often used interchangeably. This causes confusion about the difference between machine learning and artificial intelligence.

While AI is the broad science of mimicking human abilities, machine learning is a specific subset of AI that trains a machine on how to learn.

It’s clear that they’re not the same thing. Although the two terms will be spoken about in the same contexts. They’re discussed together whenever the topic is related to analytics, Big Data or matters regarding a drastic technological change.

A good way to illustrate the difference is to say that AI is the more general concept of computers being able to perform tasks we would label as ‘smart’. While Machine Learning refers to the idea that machines should be left to process data and learn for themselves, without our interference.
